Beer,going,going,gone
by Greg Dolge
It would be nice to celebrate UCSD's explosive first quarter century in style, but even the pop of a champagne cork or the pressure release fizz of a cold Stroh's has been forbidden. After 25 years of, well, tumult is the first word that comes to mind, the administration, heeding the wisdom of Vice Chancellor Joe Watson, has finally succeeded in settling this campus down. It's not really all that bad. There are some advantages to the policy change. Take the invention of the Torrey Pines Slalom for example. This automotive event is run weekly on weekend nights, usually between 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. The course is fast and scenic and the race is officiated by uniformed men with shields and firearms in specialized cars. The object is to complete the course as quickly as possible and avoid both real and imaginary obstacles in your way. Bonus points are awarded for crossing the center divider line often, and points are subtracted from your total if caught by the race officials.
Only time will tell if the new alcohol policy is successful. Some indications to look for: the number of cars wrapped around trees in Del Mar, vehicles washed up on Torrey Pines Beach, dead students, etc. It should be interesting...
Around the campus...The increase in size of both the student body and area is a pleasant surprise to most UCSD alumni. Many of them attended UCSD when it was but a fledgling UC branch, and are now beaming with pride at its rapid increase in size and stature. I talked with a few of them at a recent fund raising dinner, and asked them what they thought had most changed about UCSD since they had attended. Responded Cale Simpson, class of '72, "We could drink beer on campus." Kelly Jones, a '75 graduate, recalls that, "We had many of the same complaints that the students today have, except of course we could drink beer on campus." Sean Caldwell had this to say about the changes: "UCSD has always been a fine place to get an education and an experience, but then again we could always drink beer on campus, couldn't we." Finally, Lisa Walker probably said it best when she said, "I've never seen this Sun God fellow here before , but I do seem to remember a lot more beer." |
